PLACE TO EAT

Both Vietnamese and Western food are widely available in HCMC and English munus are common. Cholon’s speciality is Chinese food. If you are feeling spring rolled out, don’t fret; there is plenty of superb international food around.

Vietnamese

Central Area It is a bit difficult to find, but Nam Giao (Central HCMC map: Tel: 8250261; 136/15 Le Thanh Ton; mains 10.000d-20,000d open 8am – 9pm daily) is worth the quest. Tucked away in an alley of cosmetic shops, behind Ben Thanh Market, it’s cheap, delicious and always packed with locals. The food here is Hue-style and superb. There’s a simple photo menu, but if you can’t choose try the combo platter for 10.000d.

Bo Tung Xeo (Dng Khoi Area, tel 8251330, 31 Ly Tu Trong) is a popilar indoor-outdoor eatery in the City centre and it serves amazingly cheap and tasty Vietnamese barbecued food. The house speicality is tender marienated beef, which you grill over charcoal right at your table. There are also good seafood dishes on the menu, and the cheerful staff speak English

Along Ngo Duc Ke, near the river in District 1, There’s a strip of excellent restaurants serving good, cheap Vietnamese food

Restaurant 19 ( Dong Khoi Area; Tel 8298882, 19 Ngo Duc Ke str.) Serves a very tasty variantion on Hanoi’s fish cakes and good Thai dishes as well.

Thy 4 Two (Dong Khoi Area, tel 8272737; 20 D Thi Sach str. Lunch 100,000d; open Lunch & Dinner), pronounced ‘tea for two’ is a cosy little bistro doing Vietnamese fare. The lunch sets are very reasonable.

Lac Thien ( Tel; 837 1621, 28/25 Bui Vien, mains 25,000-35,000d; open 7am tp midnight) was cloned straight from the trio of travellers restaurants, run by deaf people, Up in Hue. The food is excellent and cheap.
