Phan Thiet

Phan Thiet is traditionally known for its nuon mam, though today tourism is playing an increasingly larger role in the Local economy. The population includes descendants of the Cham, who controlled this area until 1692. During the colonial period, the Europeans lived in their own segregated ghetto stretching along the northern bank of the Phan Thiet River, while the Vietnamese, Cham, Southern Chinese, Malays and Indonesians lived along the southern bank.


Phan Thiet is built along both banks of the Phan Thiet River, also known as the Ca Ti River and the Muong Man River, National Hwy1 runs right through town, south of th riverm it is known as Tran Hung Dao str. while north of the river it is called Le Hong Phong str.

PhanThiet Beach

To get to Phan Thiet’s beach front, turn east at Victory Monumnet, and arrow –shaped concrete tower with victorious cement people at the base.

Fishing Harbour

The river flowing though the centre of town creates a small fishing harbour, which is always chock a block with boats. It makes for charming photos.


The Ocean Dunes Golf Club (Tel 823366, fax 821511, email:’ Ton Duc Thang str.) is a tip notch 18hole golf course near the beach front at the Novotel

To drum up business, very reasonably priced golf package tours are available if you book from HCMC. per golfer deals are as inexpensive as US$ 80.80 weekdays/weekends, includeing one round of golf, a night at the stylish Novotel and breakfast. There is a minibus shuttle service between the golf course and HCMC

Place to Stay

Unless you are bypassing Mui Ne Beach and Just looking for a place to sleep, or golfing, don’t bother staying in Phan Thiet. Hotels here are not too cheap, and tend to be noisy.

Phan Thiet Hotel ( Tel: Fax 815930, D Tran Hung Dao str. Double US$ 5 – 30) is right in the centre of town. It a bit old and musty, and the on the highway location is anything but aesthetic. However, all the rooms have air-con and the rates include breakfast.

Hotel -19-4 ( Tel: 825216 Fax: 825 184, Tu Van Tu str. Air-con rooms from 190,000d) is an enormous old concrete place on the north side of town.

Thanh Cong Hotel ( Tel: 825 016 fax 823 905, 49-51 Tran Hung Dao, rooms with fan & Cold bath US$10, with air-con & hot water from US$10 -15) oposite hotel 19-4, is a newer minihotel.

Novotel Ocean Dunes Resort (Tel: 822393, Fax 825 682 Email;, Ton Duc Thang str. Room US$ 110-156++) is another luxurious option, To get to the hotel. Turn towards the sea (east) at the Victory Monument. Facilities include a golf course, several restaurants, a swimming pool, a private beach, tennis courts and a fitness centre Rack rate are usually heavily discounted.

Near the Novotel are two relatively new hotels: Doi Duong Hotel (Tel 822108, fax 825858, email:, 403 Vo Thi Sau, room US$ 30 -55) and the cheaper Binh Minh Hotel (tel 823344, fax 823 354, 405 Vo thi Sau, Fan rooms US$10, air-con rooms US$15.

Place to Eat

Hoang Yen restaurant (Tel 821614; 51 Tran Hung Dao) is a good eatery about midway through Phan Thiet, It is very popular with tour groups passing through town.

Getting there and Away

Bus: The buses from HCMC to Phan Thiet depart from Mien Dong Bus station.

Phan Thiet Bus station (Ben xe Binh Thuan, - Tu Van Tu str. Open 5h30am – 3h30pm) is on the Northern outskirts of town, just past 217 Le Hong Phong str. (National Hwy1)

Train: The nearest train station to Phan Thiet is 12km west of town in dusty little Muong Man. The reunification express train between Hanoi and HCMC stops here (see the train section in the Getting around chapter)

Car & Motorbike: Phan Thiet is on National Hwy 1, 198km east of HCMC, 250 km from Nha Trang and 247 km from Dalat.

When driving, becareful of the fishsouce trucks – hit one of these and the odour may follow you for life.
