Ninh Binh

Ninh Binh

Ninh Binh has evolved into a major travel center in recent years. Its sudden transformation from sleepy hamlet to tourist magnet has little to do with Ninh Binh itself, but rather with its proximity to nearby Tam Coc (9km), Hoa Lu (12km), Kenh Ga (21km) and Cuc Phuong National Park (45km).

Although its is certainly possible to visit these sights as a day trip from Hanoi, many travellers chose to overnight in Ninh Binh or the national park to appreciate the scenery at a more leisurely pace.

 Places to Stay & Eat

The hotesl in Ninh Binh are considerably cleaner and better maintained than in the norm in rural Vietnam. They all offer Internet access for around 500d per minute, make tour and transport bookings, and offer motorbikes and bikes for hire. Most places also offer basic food. The following hotels are listed by location, travelling north to south along Hwy 1.

Viet Hung Hotel(   872002; e; 2 Đ Tran Hung Dao; air-con rooms US$10-35) was built in 2001. It’s clean and bright, good value, and the prices include breakfast.

Thanh Thuy’s Guesthouse( 871811; 128 Đ Le Hong Phong; fan rooms US$4-6, air-con rooms US$8-15) is family-run, and fine for the price.

Thuy Anh Mini-Hotel( /fax 871602; e; 55A Đ Truong Han Sieu; rooms US$7-25), another family-run backpacker favorite, has spotless rooms ang is bang in the center of town.

Star Hotel(   871200; 267 Đ Tran Hung Dao; rooms with fan/air-con US$6-15), just across Đ Tran Hung Dao from the Thuy Anh, is a cheap and busy private hotel, but the staff could do with a lesson in good manners.

Queen Mini-Hotel(   871874; rooms with fan/air-con US$6-8) is just 30m from Ninh Binh train station, close to the bus station, and it’s quieter than most. The newer rooms are particularly good value, and an extension across the street (dorm beds for US$1) was almost finished when we visited.

Ninh Binh is not exactly the gastronomic heart of Vietnam, but there are a couple of clusters of com pho restaurants. One is on the corner of Đ Le Hong Phong and Đ Tran Hung Dao; another is near the railway station.

Out of town, Van Xuan Inter-Hotel Complex(   860647; air-con rooms US$25) is a pleasant, if slightly rundown, suburban place that is an alternative to staying in town. It’s not far from the Hoa Lu citadel turn-off, and you’ll need your own transport. Large rooms come with satellite TV.

Getting There & Away

Bus Ninh Binh is located 93km south of Hanoi. Regular public buses leave from the southern bus terminal in Hanoi, and make the 2½ hour run for about 25,000d. The bus station in Ninh Binh is across the Van River from the post office.

Ninh Binh is also a hub on the north-south open-tour bus route, which drops off and picks us passengers at the Thuy Anh and Star hotels. Seats on one of the most comfortable air-con buses that go to from the Old Quarter in Hanoi will cost you around US$3.

Train Ninh Binh is a scheduled stop for the ReunificationExpress trains travelling between Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) and Hanoi (see the Getting Around chapter), but only the slow S3 service stop here.
