Thai Binh

The north-central region is one of the poorest areas of Vietnam, and perhaps the least visited by foreign tourists. Most travellers make a beeline between Hue and Hanoi by bus, train or air, choosing to spend more time in places like Hoi An, Hue and points in the far south or north.

However, there are several interesting sites just a couple of hours from Hanoi, with the option of visiting on day or overnights trips from the capital. Tam Coc is an area of extraordinary beauty, where limestone pinnacles sit bang in the middle of rice paddles, while nearby the ancient capital of Hoa Lu is impressively atmospheric. The floating village of Kenh Ga gives a glimpse of life on the water, and the cathedral at Phat Diem brings European and Vietnamese religious architecture together in a unique blend. Cuc Phuong National Park offers the opportunity try to get close to nature at its best.

The beaches of north-central Vietnam, though popular with domestic tourists, pale in comparison to those in the center and along the south-central coast.

The region’s historical importance dates back to the 10th century, when the country’s capital was at Hoa Lu, with its magnificent temples set amid a beautiful rural landscape of limestone cliffs and rice paddies.

In the 13th ad 14th centuries, the Tran dynasty kings ruled from the capital of Thang Long, present-day Hanoi. This was the only period in Vietnamese history when the heirs to the throne partially succeeded their fathers, taking over the official role of king, while the older generation shared power in a second unofficial capital in Tuc Mac, about 5km from Nam Dinh. This prevented the traditional practice of feuding brothers killing each other off for the throne, making the Tran dynasty one of the most politically stable and prosperous periods in Vietnamese history. Keo Pagoda

Keo Pagoda (Chua Keo) was founded in the 12th century to honor Buddha and the monk Khong Minh Khong, who miraculously cured Emperor Ly Thanh Ton (r. 1128-38) of leprosy. The finely carved wooden bell tower is considered a masterpiece os traditional Vietnamese architecture. The nearby dike is a good place to get a general view of the pagoda complex.

Keo Pagoda is in Thai Binh province, 9.5km from Thai Binh. It’s easy to catch a motorbike taxi (10,000d) from Thai Binh to the pagoda.
