Moc Chau

MOC CHAU

022 pop 113100 elevation 1500m

This highland town produces some of Vietnam’s best tea and is a good place to stock up. The surrounding area is also home to several ethnic minorities, including Green H’mong, Dao, Thai and Muong.

Moc Chau boasts a pioneer dairy industry that started in the late 1970s with Australian and, later, UN assistance. The dairy provides Hanoi with such delectable luxuries as fresh milk, sweetened condensed milk and little tooth-rotting sweet bars called banh sua. Not surprisingly, Moc Chau is a good place to sample some fresh milk and yogurt. You should indulge yourself at one of the dairy shops that line Hwy 6 as it passes through Moc Chau.

Dung Dung Guesthouse 9866181; rooms 120,000d), about 100m off Hwy 6 – turn left at the post office in the middle of town – is the place to stay if you’re planning to overnight here.

Moc Chau is 200km from Hanoi, and the journey takes roughly six hours by private car. The road is in good condition. It’s another 120km from Moc Chau to Son La. (See Son La later in this chapter).
